As the article points out, the actual company seems no worse than most others when it comes to harversting customer data for marketing…

But, DUDE! You’re harvesting it from KIDS! Without anything resembling informed consent! For goodness sake, tweak the interface a bit (a boilerplate screen with “Before continuing, make sure your parents are OK with you giving BuildABear Inc your details!”)… because when the Build A Bear data leak occurs*, it will be with huge amounts of kids personal data, and the parents will ALL say they weren’t properly informed.

*Darby’s first rule of data: Personal data is like glitter in a kids craft box. It WILL leak, it WILL get into places you don’t want it, and you can NEVER get it all back in the container.

  1. Glitter analogy = genius. It should be forwarded to government on the back of a wrecking ball to ensure it’s fully assimilated.
